PRESERVATION & CONSERVATION
This is a home to thousands of species of life.
Before going in depth, I will talk about the difference between preservation and conservation. They are both really similar terms. To preserve is to keep something in existence, without any changes added. On the other had, to conserve is to use something wisely. As you can see, both terms are referring to the efforts to keep our world alive and stable.
What we have to realize is the fact the humans are not the sole inhabitants of the world biomes. The world biomes are also thriving with species of plants and animals, which we share the world with. Our actions, whether intentional or non-intentional, may have negative impacts on the environment, for which we have to watch and be cautious about. Human activity on Earth has increased overtime and as a result, natural habitats throughout Earth have been completely destroyed or polluted. Mother nature, in return, will affect us negatively as well if we keep doing our harmful activities. Therefore, it is crucial that we preserve and conserve our homes to avoid the severe consequences.
Forest
Forest is the an important habitat out there since it houses the most diversity of life in the world. You might never know how many undiscovered species or potential medicines there are in a forest if you do not preserve and conserve the forest. Moreover, forests have what is called a global climate-buffering capacity, which means that their destruction will result in drastic changes in global climate.
Logging is the major reason of forest depletion. As time passes, the trees just simply could not keep up with the demands for homes, paper, and other wood products. As it is becoming more and more obvious that forests are clearing away, people start to realize the errors of their ways. Caring people have been trying to conserve the forest by using it wisely and plant new trees; this helps slow down the depletion process.
Tropical forests, especially the ones in South America are suffering from timber exploitation, slash and burn farming, and deforestation for industrial use or cattle ranching. This is mainly resulted from our increasing demand for meat. Believe it or not, over half the tropical forests that were here on Earth originally are no more.
"Water"
"Help, they are destroying my home!"
What I mean by "water" biomes are freshwater and marine biomes. One could say that this is the most important of all the biomes due to a major natural resource that could be found here, which is water. Water is essential in our lives, it forms the basis of our lives and some organisms even live in it.
Oceans actually impact global climate more than forests. The reason being is that water has a higher capacity of heat than land; since water mainly make up the Earth, it helps keep the atmospheric temperature stable and "livable". Billions of photosynthetic plankton are currently residing within world's oceans, where they photosynthesize. Without their presence, there might not be enough oxygen for us to breathe.
Freshwater biomes are where we obtain our drinking water from. In addition, it provides water for crop irrigation. Pollution is the major destroyer of freshwater biomes. An example of a pollution here would be runoff containing industrial dumping, wastes, and fertilizers that are entering freshwater biomes (lakes, rivers, etc.). The substances in the runoff could promote an abnormally fast growth of algae. When they die, their dead matter rise up to the surface of the water. These accumulate and before long, the water will be unsafe for us to drink and organisms to live in.
Over fishing is also a major issue that deals with "water" biomes.
Spread the Word!
In conclusion, by educating others about how fragile our ecosystems are, we can give them better understandings of how to preserve the world's biomes. What had been destroyed could never be retrieved, but we can still conserve and preserve what's left.
