TEMPERATE DECIDUOUS FOREST
Location
The distribution of T.D.F. across the globe.
Temperate deciduous forest is located south of the boreal forest biome:
Southeastern Canada
Eastern United States
Europe
Asia
Climate
Since the temperate deciduous forest is located closer to the equator, it enjoys a warmer climate than the boreal forest. The average temperature in a year is 10 degrees Celsius; the temperature ranges from -30 degrees Celsius in the winter to 30 degrees Celsius in the summer. This biome enjoys an abundant growing season with rain ranging from 75 to 220 cm in a year.
Wildlife
Fallen leaves during the fall.
Vegetation:
As the name suggests, this biome consists of deciduous trees. Deciduous trees are trees with broad leaves such as birches, poplars, oaks and maples. Since there is an abundant of growing season and rain, the biome is able to sustain large amount of giant trees. This biome is known for its 4 seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The reason being is that the biome is located between the polar and tropical region and is exposed to warm and cold air masses. Since it could be quite cold in the winter, the trees drop and change the color of their leaves. In the winter, the trees are in a state of dormancy or sleep. The thick bark that the trees possess protect them from the cold weather in the winter. Temperature deciduous forest has a richer soil than the boreal forest on account of the quick decomposition of fallen leaves and other organic matter.
Animal:
The herbivores present enjoy a wide variety of broad leaves; the large predators prey on these herbivores. A wide variety of insects are enjoying the ideal habitat that the rich soil of the forest provides. Some examples of animals here are deer and wolves.
